Flow cytometry is a useful application used in countless labs for the phenotyping of immune cells. When discussing flow cytometers, fluorophore development is inextricably intertwined. As more and more fluorophores were generated, more complex cytometers were invented to increase multicolor flow cytometry options. Decades ago, multicolor flow experiments were capped at 2 or 3 colors; as cytometers advance this number has grown to >20 colors and continues to grow.
